Early Life of Congressman John Lewis

John Robert Lewis was born on February 21, 1940, in Troy, Alabama. He was the son of sharecroppers and grew up on his family's farm. As a young boy, he was inspired by the activism surrounding the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the words of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. He dedicated his life to the civil rights movement.

John Lewis' Civil Rights Activism

In 1961, Lewis became one of the original 13 Freedom Riders, a group of civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into the segregated South to challenge the non-enforcement of the Supreme Court's ruling that segregated public buses were unconstitutional. He was also an organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, where he spoke about the importance of civil rights.

John Lewis' Political Career

In 1981, Lewis was elected to the Atlanta City Council, and in 1986, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served for more than 30 years. He was a leader in the Democratic Party and a champion of civil rights and social justice. He was a leader in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

  1. The sweatshirt was just as advertised! Came quickly. My fault, but I had been looking for a hoodie. Didn’t realize it wasn’t a hoodie until I received it. Whoops. He still loved the gift. If you don’t already, I recommend carrying it in a hoodie 🙂

  2. The shirt is great quality. The image was better than most of them are. I already have orded different ones from them. I highly recommend them
